In a development that has stirred controversy on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, nearly 20 relatives of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the notorious former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, have entered the United States under a secret deal brokered by the Trump administration. This arrangement, reportedly linked to a plea agreement with El Chapo’s son, Ovidio Guzmán López, has raised questions about transparency and international cooperation. According to reports, the family members, including El Chapo’s ex-wife Griselda López Pérez and their daughter, crossed into the U.S. through the Tijuana/San Diego border. They were received by U.S. agents, with Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirming the crossing and suggesting it was part of a negotiated deal between Guzmán López and U.S. authorities. Guzmán López, extradited to the U.S. in 2023, is currently incarcerated and awaiting trial on multiple federal charges, including drug trafficking and money laundering.  The Mexican government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed surprise and concern over the lack of prior notification regarding the family’s entry into the U.S. Sheinbaum criticized the unilateral nature of the decision, emphasizing that such actions undermine Mexico’s sovereignty and the collaborative efforts in combating organized crime.  The Sinaloa Cartel, designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S., has been a significant player in the trafficking of fentanyl and other narcotics into the country. The recent deal and the subsequent entry of El Chapo’s relatives have intensified debates over the U.S. approach to handling cartel-related prosecutions and the broader implications for international law enforcement partnerships. As the situation unfolds, the lack of transparency surrounding the agreement and its terms continues to draw scrutiny from officials and the public alike.
